What Is the Ericson Method?

The Ericson Method is a sperm-selection technique that leverages the biological differences between sperm carrying the X chromosome (female) and Y chromosome (male).

X-bearing sperm contain slightly more DNA and move more slowly, while Y-bearing sperm are lighter and faster. The method uses a protein gradient to separate sperm populations before insemination or IVF, enriching the sample toward the preferred gender.

Sperm Collection and Preparation

A semen sample is collected and washed to remove seminal plasma and non-motile sperm.

Albumin Gradient Separation

The prepared sample is placed over carefully calibrated layers of human serum albumin (HSA) solution. Y-sperm (male) move faster through the layers, while X-sperm (female) migrate more slowly.

Timed Extraction

After precise timing intervals, sperm are extracted from the layer most enriched with the desired chromosome type.

Fertilization

The enriched sperm sample is used for intrauterine insemination (IUI) or IVF. This simple, non-invasive technique relies on natural sperm behavior rather than fluorescent dyes or mechanical separation.
